A bee-ute-i-ful five pounder from a river(?!) that is visible from I-95 in Our Fair State of New Hampshire . I caught this guy around noon on a green/watermelon rubber worm that I picked up in the discount bin at wal-mart. Great success. I was very excited to say the least.

Hey Berkley Fishing, I caught this on one of your Tournament Edition rods and I’m rocking your hat–how ’bout some love??? Heh?

The Madbury fishing tournament only lasted a couple hours because of some fireworks we had to watch but, Joe managed to pull two Larrys out of the resevoir. He is so good that he needs to bring two rods so he can fish with two hands. 7-9-09

A New Leader and a New Member

Chris keeps complaining that no one writes anything up here besides him and that all we do is update the stats, so I’ve decided to stop slacking off. Actually, that’s not true. I haven’t been slacking off, I’ve been too busy trying to figure out how the hell to accurately cast this new baitcaster I have on loan and in the process take over the leader board, so that’s why I haven’t written anything yet. The fact is this league is about fishing, not blogging.

There are some new things to report on though. First off, The League of Extraordinary Bass Fishermen welcomes Timmah into the fold as the fifth member of Portsmouth’s premier Largemouth Bass non-profit organization. He’s assured us that our fishing rods and boats are on the way, so entry has been granted (the only way to join the league is to buy each member a boat and fishing rod). Timmah is an up and coming bass fisherman who has sharpened his skills by fishing for trout in Exeter and by drinking whiskey. His membership will be greatly appreciated.

Also, as I mentioned earlier, I have begun fishing with a baitcaster and have momentarily taken sole possession of first place. In an organization with such dedicated and experienced fishermen I fully recognize that no lead is safe and only hope that the Larrys keep on biting. I was able to take the lead by reeling in two largemouths on the Powwow River using a shallow water crankbait on a baitcaster.

I’ve always been interested in using a bait caster because that’s typically what you see professional bass fishermen use and I wanted to know what kind of edge it gives you. Well, I can say this: there is definitely a learning curve as far as learning how to cast them accurately, but they allow you to drop your lure exactly where you want it distance-wise. Using your thumb to control the drop of the lure as it’s casted out, you are given much greater control than with a spinning reel where your only option for decreasing the distance of your cast (while it is being thrown) is to start reeling in. Chris and I have discussed how baitcasters are susceptible to bird’s nests, but my experience with this reel hasn’t been that bad. When it does bird’s nest, it is actually easier to fix than with a spinning reel. This is because you are pulling the line straight out over the spool and not off it sideways the way a spinning is designed. Also, when you get a bird’s nest with a spinning reel (at least from my experience and I am very experienced with bird’s nests) your line can get all tangled behind the reel and inside the casing which is a royal pain in the ass to deal with.

Bottom line: The baitcaster is a streamlined design that with a little practice and patience can really pay off when it comes to putting your lure right on top of a lazy Larry.

South of the Border

The afternoon involved the full team of The League Of Extroridinary Bass Fishermen (the afformentioned League will also known as LEBF) and we had quite the afternoon. It started off with high hope because we were heading south of the border. I was determined to catch more fish then Joseph because I knew a one bass lead won’t hold up for long. So after I towed all the boats to the water by my Cayanne and we dropped them one by one into the river the competition was set to begin. Each boat had it’s own dog and two fishermen. Maggie and Turbo are not able to fish because they are dogs. They don’t really have a chance to win the Masters but, we let them in just to make their summers a little bit better. So as the LEBF departed from the docks into the murky silt stained waters of the river I knew that I had my work cut out for me. My lead was only one bass and at any time on the water someone can make a run with the hot lure. I had to be on my game to make sure that Joe didn’t pass me. The Doctor, Maggie, and I were heading off working the banks. I was going with a red and yellow spinner and Doc had a Yammamoto worm. Very soon we were both dipping into our tackle to find the next bait that we were going to attack with. I went to the worm and Doc flipped to the spinner(we did make sure that we used different colors) and this is when things started picking up. I hooked up after about thirty minutes after Maggie jumped out the first time. It was a nice Larry(The Large Mouth) and I was pumped that I pushed the lead up to two. Very soon after Doc hooked into his fish then Maggie jumped out again. What a pain that was. My dog was flopping around in the water trying to climb back into the boat and Doc was flipping out trying to land his fish. Lots of water was being splashed by everyone. I managed to drag the poor pup back into my ride about the same time the fish was landed. I was so happy so far we had two bass and the other guys still only caught pickerel. HAHAHAHA. Just kidding sorry guys. Its not funny. No really it is. SO I grabbed my rod and God himself must have heard my chuckles because tragidy struck home. I went to cast my lure to the perfect spot where I knew Larry was waiting and I heard CRAAAAACXSFDFK SACLKFDSLFKKKKKK MUTHERFUCKER. My rod broke in half just hanging by some fibers blowing in the breeze. I couldn’t believe what had happened. I took a minute to calm down and just picked up where I left off using Doc’s rod. I could’t let Joe take the lead! No more fish for anyone the rest of the day and we ended up heading home soon thereafter. Today was chalenging for me to overcome the obsticles that were thrown in my way but, I am happy I can still sleep tonight knowing that I have the lead in this summers tournament.

On a side note St. Croix has a good warranty on their products so I should be able to get a new rod.

: Where is the pond again?

More black flies than bass.

Yesterday proved to be a better day of fishing than today was. Yesterday my friend the Doctor and I went to a pond that we had heard much about over the years. The word was that this was where you go if you want to catch a shoe box full of five pounders. I would say that this held true but, it was mostly big old pickerel that we hooked into. We worked our way around the pond until we were crisped nicely by the sun. Today however I tried to catch fish in a new place that didn’t quite go as planned. It started off with Nick, Joe, Maggie, and I heading out to a place that some bar customer told me about. I thought that I knew where we were going but, I guess that my directions were a little off. We walked around some baseball field where some guy was walking his golden retriever and he must have thought that we were nuts. I can only imagine what I would think if I was walking my dog and saw three full grown men and a dog walking around looking for a pond that didn’t exist. We walked around the field and down some powerlines with rods and tackle in hand. My dog, Maggie was all over the place running over to the retriever and then back and through the woods. With all the searching and jumping over the monster sized ticks we never ended up finding the water. I am sure it was there somewhere close by and that is what will make it a fucking awesome fishing hole when I finally catch up with it. Maybe next time… At least we could go to the little river that was stocked with trout so we could at least go and take a few casts, into swarms of black flies, because that’s all that biting. So today Wednesday May, 20th involved no bass. However on a lighter note, yesterday I took the bass lead with 11 on the season up one bass over Joe.

We are the biggest up and comming Large Mouth Bass fishing club in the country and we decided to share our stories with everyone out there.
